Minto & Mirza maintains a strong commitment to the public good through its pro bono practice. The Firm believes in fulfilling the obligation to assist through pro bono work those individuals and groups that are specially vulnerable and unable to afford legal services.
Recent Representative Work
The senior Consultant of the Firm – Mr. Abid Hassan Minto, has been engaged through the years in several landmark cases involving, inter alia, violations of rights of minorities under the blasphemy law as well as other discriminatory laws, labour rights, gender discrimination, freedoms of movement, assembly, political participation and speech and judicial review of arbitrary and coercive administrative actions. The other members of the Firm routinely assist him in such matters to carry forward the Firms’ tradition of pro bono service.
Represented Pakistan Engineering Council to challenge its supercession by a Presidential Ordinance, as being an ultra vires act to undermine a democratic institution.
Legal documentation for conservation and rehabilitation of the historical sites of Uch Sharif.
Represented the National Workers Party to challenge Political Parties Order 2002 on grounds of being ultra vires of Article 17 of the Constitution of 1973.
Successfully challenged the privatisation of the First Women Bank Ltd. to preserve the inherent status of the bank.
Prepared a case study on the plight of juvenile delinquents in Pakistani jails and an NGO initiative to assist them through teaching facilities, free legal aid and rehabilitation centers.
